Director for Learning Therapy Program

The Department of Teaching and Learning in the Simmons School of Education and Human Development invites nominations and applications for a 37.5 hour per week (with benefits), non-tenured Director of the Learning Therapy Program. Our department has an undergraduate major in education, and a M.Ed in education and in bilingual education, with specializations including learning therapy, reading and writing, and special education. Education: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Reading or Special Education

Qualifications and Experience: Requirements for the position include:

  • Teaching and/or other experience working in a public school setting;
  • Teaching and administrative experience in an educational setting (five years or more).  Administrative experience in higher education is strongly preferred;
  • Knowledge of special education state and national laws and policies for students with disabilities, including dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

Training and Certification Requirements: Certified Academic Language Therapist, CALT Instructor; Additional IDA qualifications

The Director oversees all aspects of the Learning Therapy program, including the scheduling of courses and teaching assignments for the International Dyslexia Association (IDA)- and  International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) -accredited graduate certificate programs. The Director supervises instructors, develops curriculum, teaches, and recruits and advises students. The Director represents the program internally as a member of the Department of Teaching and Learning’s Literacy/Special Education committee, and externally through relationships with foundations and professional organizations, which includes representing SMU at relevant local, state, and national conferences. The Director ensures compliance with the requirements of its two accrediting agencies. The Director also teaches courses and oversees development of new courses and other Departmental and Program-related changes as needed.

Some specific roles and responsibilities follow: 

  • Supervising and observing instructional staff; monitoring curricula, syllabi, and workshop content to ensure the program remains IDA and IMSLEC certified. Conduct syllabi review to cross walk content with IDA, IMLSEC, CEC, Texas TEKS, and other relevant governing bodies;
  • Working with staff and advisors to plan and schedule courses, workshops, and teaching assignments. Planning and overseeing the budget;
  • Teaching for the program, and for the Department;
  • Maintaining the web site and social media presence; meeting with local independent school districts; recruiting and advising students; and overseeing and evaluating student progress (ensuring that all required evaluation documents are retained);
  • Interacting with and preparing reports for accreditation agencies; ensuring compliance with accreditation standards;
  • Representing the program to local, regional, and national organizations, foundations, and conferences;
  • Developing new courses and exploring new distance learning sites; and
  • Maintaining departmental presence through interaction with department chair, attendance at departmental meetings, and participation on the Literacy/SPED committee.
