Dutchess Community College — Dean of Students

The Dean of Students at Dutchess Community College (DCC) provides leadership and management for the student services division and maintains a culture of teamwork and collaboration within the divisional staff and across the DCC community. This position reports to the Provost and is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for students at Dutchess Community College. The Dean leads and engages in strategic planning and promotes creative ideas that enable the student services division and the college to be productive, efficient, and continuously improve services. The Dean holds and promotes the attitude that every student can be successful, that the purpose of the college is to enable students to be so, and to utilize the authority of the position to enable that success. The Dean is responsible for developing and implementing services and programs designed to develop a culture that synthesizes the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of all of our students.

The Dean of Students will:

  • Lead the student services division in upholding the mission, vision, value and goals of Dutchess Community College
  • Lead and supervise the planning, organizing, directing, staffing, coordinating, and oversight for programs and policies of the Student Services division of the College including student development and counseling, student health and wellness, residence life, , athletics, judicial affairs, student grievance, graduation, and student activities and organizations
  • Work with the Student Services staff, student groups and other members of the College community to develop extracurricular programming assuring integration with the academic life of the institution, supporting learning and development of students outside the classroom and encouraging student personal growth and development
  • Supervise generally the work of all Students Services staff, and specifically the work of the Assistant Deans of Student Services, the Director of Counseling, the Athletic Director, the College Nurse, the Director of the Day Care Center and the Director of Student Life
  • Provide staff with appropriate professional development and in-service training.
  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and regulations pertaining to student life, especially those related to alcohol and drug usage, student conduct and student residences
  • Administer the policies and regulations of the College as they pertain to students, including internal College judicial and disciplinary procedures;
  • Provide effective management of the College fiscal resources including developing and managing the budget for departments within the Student Services Division
  • Remain up-to-date with state and federal legislation regarding student services, and ensures that the college’s policies and procedures are congruent with the legislation
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs, faculty, and academic support staff to improve student retention
  • Serve as an ambassador for College with alumni, parents, students, community leaders, and professional colleagues
  • Promote a student culture where diversity is encouraged and where students learn to respect differences, take responsibility for their actions, and exercise leadership
  • Conduct such studies as may be necessary for the evaluation and assessment of the effectiveness of departments within the division of Student Services
  • Provide leadership for the preparation and implementation of the Student Services’ section of the College’s strategic planning documents
  • Coordinate and supervise divisional assessment activities; Implement strategies and processes to perform and assess outcomes measures for programs and services; make recommendations for improvements and resources based on assessment. Participate in institutional assessment activities as required
  • Serve on the college senior management team and other designated ad hoc, college standing committees, and professional organizations; serve as a member of the Administrative Staff Council, and the Committee on Student Learning & Assessment
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Provost and the President of the College

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Candidates must have a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Student Services, Student Development, Counseling, Higher Education, Administrative Leadership or a closely related field. Doctoral degree preferred.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Minimum ten (10) years’ experience in a in a higher education setting, preferably a community college including a minimum of five (5) years of experience with increasing level of responsibilities in the areas of student services, student success, or other areas promoting student outcomes is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership in campus operations and student services administration working with teams and using quality improvement principles
  • Experience with strategic enrollment management practices that positively impact recruitment, retention, progression, and completion for a wide range of student demographics
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to be a leader within higher education in pioneering creative approaches to improving student outcomes
  • Cutting-edge knowledge of trends and issues in student activities and student services in higher education and support
  • Experience with and understanding of student development and programming
  • Proven ability to lead and supervise the planning, organizing, directing, staffing, coordinating, and oversight for programs and policies of the student services function of the College
  • Experience developing relationships and working with community partners
  • A track record of valuing and promoting diversity among the faculty, staff, and student body
  • Understanding of administration of admissions and records, federal and state financial aid programs
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration
  • Experience developing proposals and managing grants
  • Experience in operational planning, policy development, and outcome/needs assessment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to clearly articulate ideas and defend positions, as well as the interpersonal abilities to engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and external constituents effectively and in a collegial manner
  • Experience with developing and overseeing budgets that utilize funding effectively and efficiently
  • Experience in conducting assessments, evaluations, and improvement plans for student affairs and related programs
