Bluffton University — President

The Bluffton University Board of Trustees has announced the search for the University’s tenth president and invites nominations and applications for this uncommon leadership opportunity to become effective no later than July 1, 2018. Bluffton seeks a visionary leader who will work aggressively to promote the University’s reputation as a caring Christian community, its interest in serving a diverse student body, its commitment to high quality teaching and student transformation, its ability to blend the liberal arts and professional curricula, and its distinctive Mennonite tradition.

Bluffton emerged from a progressive Anabaptist heritage, a Mennonite Christian tradition grounded in the values of peace, justice, openness, service, free inquiry, and human dignity. A commitment to inclusive dialogue across the religious spectrum contributes to Bluffton being a “different kind of Christian College.” New leadership should understand the Mennonite Church USA, its history, and its structure as the denominational body to which the University remains related, but it is not a requirement that the next president be a Mennonite.

The president will be expected to energize the campus around an affirming vision for success. A new leader should bring an ability to listen carefully, observe thoughtfully, and quickly implement an agenda that includes the development of a new strategic plan and the deepening of Bluffton’s resource base. This latter responsibility will include attention to enriching the University’s philanthropic culture and enhancing its enrollment management program. It is essential that new enrollment strategies be central to the larger strategic plan and include the appointment of a new vice president for enrollment management. Also important will be presidential opportunities to extend Bluffton’s visibility and reputation, exercise strong financial stewardship, inspire an effective leadership team, enrich the quality of student life, celebrate diversity throughout the community, and nurture best governance practices.

Bluffton is located 59 miles south of Toledo, in a friendly village of 4,000. Current enrollment includes 726 undergraduate students and just under 100 graduate students. A dedicated faculty, of which 78% hold terminal degrees, engage students in a program consisting of 90 undergraduate programs (majors and minors) including new offerings in nursing and speech-language pathology and audiology. Bluffton supports more than 50 co-curricular programs including 16 NCAA Division III athletic teams.

Bluffton seeks a president with vision, energy, strength of personality, and an ability to articulate how a liberal arts-centered, independent, Mennonite university can thrive while addressing the interests of the 21st century learner.
