Appalachian State University — Faculty Position in Nutrition and Foods: Community Nutrition

The Department of Nutrition and Health Care Management in the Beaver College of Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time position in Nutrition and Foods with emphasis on community nutrition. This position will begin on August 1, 2018, and  is a tenure-track, nine-month position at the assistant/associate professor level.  Rank will be negotiable, depending on experience.  The Department of Nutrition and Health Care Management particularly encourages applications from candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students from populations underrepresented at Appalachian State.

Responsibilities will include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in nutrition and foods, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in research and career planning, assisting in program development, engaging in scholarship/research, and contributing to professional, departmental and university service activities.  Qualifications for the full-time, tenure track position include: a doctorate in nutrition or community nutrition, food systems management, or a related area; ABD candidates will be considered, with successful completion of candidate’s program requirements expected by position start date.  Special consideration will be given to applicants who are Registered Dietitians and have relevant professional experience and successful teaching experience.  Professional experience could include community and public health nutrition or food systems. Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications.

The Department of Nutrition and Health Care Management has 18 full-time faculty and approximately 425 undergraduate and graduate students.  The Department, created as part of the new Beaver College of Health Sciences which began July 1, 2010, has grown significantly in enrollment.  The Nutrition and Foods programs have doubled since that time.  These include an undergraduate Didactic Program in Dietetics and a combined Dietetic Internship/MS Nutrition Program.  The program also includes an undergraduate concentration in Food Systems Management. Both the undergraduate dietetics program and the dietetic internship are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).  Opportunities are available to assist in growing optional tracks at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Additional information on the department can be found on the ASU website, http://www.nutrition.appstate.edu.

The nutrition and dietetics programs are housed within the Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS), which is the newest and second largest college at Appalachian with over 3400 undergraduate and graduate majors served by 150 faculty and staff. The College is divided among six departments housing six undergraduate and 10 graduate programs  In addition, the BCHS is home for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC Institute for Health and Human Services and the Human Performance Lab at the NC Research Campus (NCRC) in Kannapolis, and has a collaborative partnership with Wake Forest School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant Program.  This partnership has resulted in a cohort of this acclaimed program being delivered on the Appalachian campus and will enhance student learning through interprofessional clinical and service outreach.  Construction has begun on a new state of the art $80 million, 203,000 square foot facility for the BCHS that will be the cornerstone of the ASU Health Sciences Campus and is slated for opening Fall 2018.  The building will provide cutting-edge foods labs, active learning classrooms, student collaborative areas and community outreach facilities.
