African Americans Underrepresented in College Athletic Leadership Posts

The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at the University of Central Florida recently released a report on athletic leadership at 130 colleges and universities that make up the NCAA’s Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. The report found that the academic and athletic administrations at these 130 colleges and universities are overwhelmingly White and male. The Institute gave an overall grade of D+ for its diversity scorecard in leadership at these schools.

Here are some statistics from the report:

* White men held 72.3 percent of the 130 president positions. Five were Black.
* White men held 77.7 percent of the 130 athletics director positions. Fourteen were Black.
* More than 87 percent of faculty athletics representatives were White and 31.1 percent were women. Twelve were Black.
* White men held nine of the ten FBS conference commissioner positions. None was Black.
* African Americans made up 55.9 percent of the football players but only 10.8 percent of the football head coaches.
