The University of Missouri-St. Louis is searching for an engaged and dynamic Dean of the Pierre Laclede Honors College (PLHC). We seek a leader who believes passionately in the value of honors education and the unique curricular and extra-curricular experiences it provides students. Additionally, we seek a leader who understands the challenges and importance of the role that honors plays, in recruiting and retaining high-achieving students to the university.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis is the largest public research institution located in Missouri’s most diverse, populous, and economically vibrant region. The university has over 16,000 students, including over 8000 on-campus undergraduates. UMSL is a part of the University of Missouri land-grant system and is classified as RU-H (high research activity) and as a Community Engaged Campus by Carnegie rankings.

The PLHC is a small college with a liberal arts mission inside this larger, research-engaged, public university. The College provides interesting and innovative seminar courses, full service academic advising, a First Year Experience program, a writing program and an internship/independent study program to approximately 600 students who earn an Honors Certificate upon completing the curriculum. The PLHC offers approximately 50 classes per semester, most with enrollment limited entirely or predominantly to Honors students. These students come from all majors, with our largest populations pursuing degrees in business, biology, nursing, psychology, engineering, and English. Incoming students have an average 3.6 GPA, 85% class rank, and 27 ACT composite. The PLHC is located near the Oak Hall residence which is home to the honors living learning community. Our dedicated PLHC staff includes an associate dean, five non-tenure track faculty members, an academic advisor, a student recruitment specialist, an office support staff member, and a business support staff member.

The dean is a campus leader who guides curriculum development, community engagement, and the College’s mission and vision. The dean is responsible for strategic planning, budget management, fundraising, faculty and staff supervision, and representation of PLHC in campus shared governance processes. The Dean also negotiates relationships with other campus units and stakeholders. Within the PHLC, the dean will also support and participate in the College’s admissions processes (interviewing prospective students) and full-service mission (academic advising). As the chief academic and administrative officer at the PLHC, the dean reports directly to the Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The PLHC seeks an innovative leader who is committed to honors education, particularly its learner-directed pedagogy, interdisciplinary curriculum, and emphasis on student development and scholarship, creativity, leadership, and extra-curricular opportunities. The Dean will guide the College toward greater engagement with the local community and with national and regional honors organizations.

The successful candidate must have a terminal degree and a successful record of teaching, advising, scholarship, service and academic accomplishments appropriate for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor (tenure track) or Teaching Professor (non-tenure track).

Other desired qualifications include:

  • Significant experience in an honors college or program;
  • University administrative experience at the departmental level or higher, with preference for administrative experience in honors;
  • An enthusiasm for and proven track record of raising funds from a variety of sources, including private donors, foundations, government agencies, and alumni;
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills;
  • Expertise in developing diverse and inclusive learning and working environments;
  • Record of collaborative leadership, applicable to both shared governance within the college and to its relationship with other units and stakeholders on campus;
  • Understanding of the role of General Education in developing key competencies and literacies that establish the foundational bases of student success in major fields and future pursuits;
  • Understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of honors curriculums and the role of Honors as a laboratory for curricular innovation;
  • Knowledge about different curricular and structural models for honors colleges and the roles honors plays in a university;
  • Dedication toward recruitment and retention and an understanding of the unique approaches that characterize recruitment and retention of honors students.
