Texas A&M University is conducting a national search to identify an accomplished leader for the Texas A&M University Higher Education Center at McAllen. The appointment could be at either the assistant provost or executive director level, depending on credentials and experience.

About the Position:
One of the state’s public land grant institutions, Texas A&M University has an enrollment of over 66,000 students, a faculty of over 3,000, nationally-ranked educational programs, internationally recognized scholarship, and a commitment to excellence. The Higher Education Center at McAllen builds on existing educational offerings in nursing and public health to expand teaching, research, and service opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. A new baccalaureate program in interdisciplinary engineering began in fall 2017, and completion of a dedicated educational facility is anticipated in spring 2018. Additional degree programs are planned for implementation in the coming years.

The position will report to the associate provost for undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University in College Station. The center is located in McAllen, Texas, and the position will require significant coordination with other Texas A&M University administrators, faculty, and staff in College Station, Texas. The position is expected to provide leadership and foster collaborations to help the university achieve its mission by:

  • Collaborating with colleges, non-academic units, and administration to establish and implement a strategic vision for the Higher Education Center at McAllen
  • Strategically growing educational, scholarship, and outreach programs that serve the Rio Grande Valley
  • Overseeing allocation of infrastructure and resources and establish strategic plans for growth
  • Supporting participating colleges on issues related to faculty including hiring, professional development, workload reporting, and evaluation
  • Working with colleges, non-academic units, and administration to develop and sustain student services at the Higher Education Center at McAllen
  • Establishing and sustaining critical relationships inside and outside the university
  • Fostering inclusivity, diversity, and civility across the Higher Education Center at McAllen

The successful candidate must have a thorough understanding of the challenges and opportunities present at a large comprehensive research university, a commitment to meaningful collaboration across academic and non-academic units, and enthusiasm for advancing Texas A&M University’s excellent educational, scholarship, and outreach programs in the Rio Grande Valley. Additional qualifications may include:

  • Significant higher education administrative and leadership experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to build effective partnerships with colleges and departments, non-academic units across the university, and the local community
  • Proven ability to foster inclusive engagement with diverse students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated record of continuous improvement based on evaluation of assessment data
  • Strong written and oral skills in Spanish desirable, but not required

If the position is filled at the assistant provost level, an additional qualification would be a distinguished record of academic achievement and scholarship commensurate with a tenured associate or full professor at Texas A&M University and, desirably, in a discipline represented at the Higher Education Center at McAllen.
