Five African Americans Taking on New Faculty Roles in Academia

Gilbert Cornelius is a new assistant professor in the College of Education on the Minneapolis campus of St. Thomas University in Minnesota. He was an assistant professor of adult and higher education at Northern Illinois University.

Dr. Cornelius holds a bachelor’s degree in art history and Black studies, a master’s degree in Black studies, and a Ph.D. in education, all from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Del Wright Jr. was hired as an associate professor of law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He was an associate professor of law at Valparaiso University in Indiana.

Professor Wright is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he majored in psychology. He holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University and a juris doctorate from the University of Chicago.

Sheri Williams is a new assistant professor in the School of Communication at American University in Washington, D.C. She is a journalist who worked for the Associated Press and several newspapers.

Dr. Williams is a graduate of Jackson State University in Mississippi. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University in New York.

Brian Boyd, an associate professor of occupational science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was named director of the Juniper Gardens Children’s Project, a research center on urban education at the University of Kansas. He has been on the faculty at the University of North Carolina since 2009 and will begin his new role in Kansas on February 1.

Dr. Boyd is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in special education from the University of Florida.

Joe M. Brown was named chair of the department of criminal justice at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. He joined the faculty at the university in 2007 after working for over 25 years with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Dr. Brown is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Prairie View A&M University in Texas.
