Yale University — AYA Communications & Marketing Director

General Purpose: Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) is responsible for university-wide alumni relations programs and for providing events, initiatives, and other opportunities to strengthen alumni relationships with Yale. Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, the AYA Communications and Marketing Director will design and implement an integrated marketing and communications strategy to promote AYA, its programs, and affiliated alumni groups to worldwide Yale family (165,000 alumni) and campus community.

  • Develop framework and brand voice for AYA strategic communications across multiple platforms (print, web, social, video) consistent with Yale messaging. Identify new and innovative content delivery opportunities; create strategies to maximize effectiveness of existing channels.
  • Create and manage outreach plans for signature programs, such as AYA Assembly, Yale Day of Service, and alumni online services, using multiple formats (email, article, social media, newsletter, brochure). Manage key communications for Executive Director, including content development and delivery methodology. Solicit and curate alumni-written content; package for distribution through AYA or university channels.
  • Collaborate with Public Affairs & Communications, Development, President’s office, and other campus communicators to leverage their expertise and to promote university messages and content of interest to alumni and friends.
  • Provide guidance and best practices to AYA staff on communications, including email marketing, social media, analytics, and style guides. Collaborate and coordinate with graduate & professional school alumni relations colleagues regarding all-alumni communications.
  • Create metrics for AYA marketing activities. In consultation with senior management, develop goals based on these metrics and strategies to meet them; monitor and report on outcomes.
  • Manage AYA’s relationships with internal and external vendors for graphic design, specialized content, etc. Develop roster of preferred vendors and resources.
  • Shepherd implementation of visual identity guidelines for volunteer-led alumni organizations, such as regional Yale clubs, Yale College classes, & shared interest groups.
  • Participate in and staff AYA activities such as Yale College reunions and Assembly, including evenings and weekends as necessary.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field and five years of experience in public relations, journalism, television, corporate communications or agency work or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in developing communications for a range of media and working with creative professionals in design, photography or video.


  • Superb verbal and written communications skills; proven ability to think analytically and articulate ideas in various communication formats. Skilled editor across multiple media, including articles, email, websites, and social media channels.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as needed. Ability to build productive working relationships with staff and volunteers to achieve common goals and contribute to AYA’s mission.
  • Appreciation and respect for diversity and ability to communicate with diverse audiences (age, gender, nationality, race/ethnicity, profession, geography, etc.). Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet multiple, competing responsibilities. Demonstrated success is developing and managing multiple projects and deadlines from conception to completion with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work successfully and creatively in a fast-paced and changing environment while maintaining composure and a sense of humor. Willingness to learn new tools and stay abreast of marketing trends.
  • Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Experience in higher education, nonprofits, alumni relations, public relations, or related field. Experience leading communications/marketing plans, organizational positioning, or strategic planning. Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, Drupal or other web CMS, email messaging systems, and CRM platforms. Experience using social media for business applications.
