Assistant Director, UC San Diego Marshall College Dimensions of Culture Writing Program (Academic Coordinator I – AY/ Lecturer)

The University of California, San Diego, Marshall College Dimensions of Culture Writing Program (DOC) is currently looking for an Assistant Director who would be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the program. Duties include curricular development, pedagogical planning, as well as providing support, guidance and mentoring of Teaching Assistants (TAs), Non-Student Tutors, and Lecturers. The Dimensions of Culture Program Assistant Director would also serve as Instructor of Record, teaching one to three sections of DOC in each academic year.

In association with the Director, the Assistant Director designs weekly TA meetings, and implements the Fall seminar and TA Orientation. In addition, the Assistant Director establishes program research, and is actively engaged in the recruitment of prospective TAs and Lecturers.

This is an academic-year (9-month) appointment with the eligibility of continued appointment per UC guidelines. The Academic Coordinator appointment has the eligibility for reappointment and merit every 2 years. The Lecturer piece has the potential for appointment annually via the lecturer application process.

Hiring Salary Range: $50,244-$62,784 (Salary commensurate with experience) *Teaching in the summer as additional compensation may be considered.

Required Qualifications-

  • A Ph.D./terminal degree in Composition and Rhetoric, American Studies or related fields (degree must be conferred by April 1, 2018)
  • A record of distinguished teaching in composition or other writing programs at the college level
  • Demonstrated ability to teach lower-division courses that address the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality and other categories of difference in U.S. society, history, and culture
  • Formal knowledge of testing/evaluations
  • Excellent organizational abilities to plan, prioritize and balance multiple projects/tasks
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work well in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with faculty, staff, and students
  • Strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversityPreferred Qualifications:
    -Experience in curricular planning and development
    -Knowledge of research about how students learn in higher education
    -Experience in teaching large classes (over 100 students) is especially desirable, as is experience teaching in a research university

The year-long Dimensions of Culture Program introduces TMC students to major issues in the history of the United States with an emphasis on the tension between the nation’s founding principles and the inequality and lack of opportunity experienced by various groups over time. Topics include:

  • successive waves of immigration
  • the formation of stratifications based on gender, class, “race,” religion, and other categories
  • the social movements that struggled to fulfill the founding ideals
  • the role of institutions in the delivery of justice and equity, and
  • the cultural production that has been shaped by these issues.All three courses in the lower-division DOC sequence provide undergraduate students with a critical language that allows them to analyze social problems in an intelligent and grounded fashion. In addition to attending core curriculum faculty lectures, students will participate in small discussion sections led by graduate student Teaching Assistants.
