Director, Office of Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (SAIL)

Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, is seeking an energetic, passionate and experienced student affairs visionary to lead the Office of Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (SAIL). Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the Director will have direct oversight of the office and lead the efforts to create a robust and engaged student life outside the classroom. S/he is expected to augment and create leadership opportunities and training for students and office staff and provide advice and support for student leaders and organizations. The Director will also have oversight of two campus centers, Mather Hall and Vernon Social. Two Assistant Directors, an operations coordinator, office and graduate assistants, a graduate intern, as well as close to 100 student workers will report under the Director. Given the requirement that the incumbent live on campus and serve in an on-call capacity, the College provides an unfurnished apartment (utilities and cable included).

The ideal candidate is expected to have broad experience in activities planning, student advising, event management and campus center operations. A good understanding of liberal arts communities is preferred and candidates should be conversant in student development theory and best practices. The following should be included in the candidate’s skill set:

  • An advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Strong commitment to the liberal arts experience along with evidence of an appreciation for working in a diverse community.
  • Ability to adapt leadership style to the unique needs and interests of the student population.
  • 5 – 7 years progressive experience in campus activities, programming, event management and operations.
  • Strong record of developing student leaders and leadership programs.
  • Experience in designing and managing new student orientation.
  • Experience in negotiating and reviewing contracts.
  • Flexibility in schedule to be able to work some nights and weekends.
  • Superior time management skills with good ability to multitask. Strong problem solving skills are an important asset.
  • Excellent attention to detail and evidence of good judgment and strong work ethic.
  • Supervisory experience and a record of training and evaluating personnel. There are high expectations that the director will serve as a strong role model for students and staff alike and that s/he will lead by example consistently.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and across diverse communities is necessary. Candidates should possess solid experience in developing and sustaining positive relationships across the workplace. Good communication skills, both orally and in writing are essential, as is the ability to represent the office and its interests to various campus constituencies.
  • Ability to interpret and apply college rules and regulations as they pertain to student organizations and activities.
  • Good proficiency with computers and software programs including familiarity with using social media to support departmental goals.
