In Memoriam: Alton Hornsby Jr.

Alton Hornsby, professor emeritus of history at Morehouse College in Atlanta, died on September 1.

A native of Georgia, Dr. Hornsby was a 1961 graduate of Morehouse College. He earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin.

After teaching briefly at Tuskegee University in Alabama, Dr. Hornsby joined the faculty at Morehouse College and served as chair of the history department for 30 years. After nearly 40 years on the Morehouse College faculty, Dr. Hornsby retired in 2010.

Dr. Hornsby was the editor of the Journal of Negro History for 25 years. He was the author or editor of a number of books including A Companion to African American History (Blackwell, 2005) and African Americans in the Post-Emancipation South: The Outsiders’ View (University Press of America, 2005).
