Faculty Position in Structural Engineering for Extreme Events

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a full professor in the area of structural engineering for extreme events. This full-time, tenured position includes teaching and research responsibilities, in addition to leadership of the structural engineering program.

The University of Nevada, Reno is experiencing unprecedented growth. Fifty new tenure-track and full-time instructional faculty will be added this coming year for a total of 217 new positions since 2013. Enrollment is expected to reach 22,000 students by 2020. Much of this growth is in engineering and science and a new, 90,000 sq. ft., engineering building is expected to open in 2020.

The structural and earthquake engineering program within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is one of the university’s premier research programs with nine academic faculty, two research faculty and approximately 35 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Its structural engineering laboratories are unique in the United States, and rank among the most advanced in the world. They comprise the 18,000 sq. ft. Large-Scale Structures Laboratory with 7,500 sq. ft. of strong floor space, and the 44,000 sq. ft. Earthquake Engineering Laboratory with 9,600 sq. ft. of strong floor space. The latter houses the only re-locatable, four-table array in the U.S. capable of simulating earthquakes for large-scale, system-level experiments. This array includes three, identical, 50-ton, biaxial shake tables, and a 50-ton, 6-degree-of-freedom shake table (https://www.unr.edu/cceer). A fifth shake table and laminar soil box is under construction for studying soil-structure interaction. When complete in summer 2018, it will be the second largest such facility in the world. In addition, a large family of servo-hydraulic actuators is available for hybrid experimentation. In accordance with the University’s mission as a land grant institution, duties include undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision of graduate students, performance of research, development of externally funded research activities, and university service. In addition the successful candidate will be expected to become the Director of the Center for Civil Engineering Earthquake Research, and leader of the structural engineering program. The expected start date is July 1, 2018.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent qualification, and an extensive research background in structural engineering. In particular, the candidate is required to have expertise in both computational structural mechanics and large-scale experimental methods related to structural resiliency under extreme events. In addition the candidate must have a national and international reputation for quality and breadth of research, a strong record of securing competitive research grants, leadership experience, and excellent communication skills.

In addition to the above required qualifications, experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable: shake table simulation, hybrid simulation, advanced materials, soil-structure-interaction, and high performance computing. Experience in innovative teaching is also desirable.
