The Division of Graduate Studies at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications for a Graduate Admissions Counselor position.

Date of Appointment: Anticipated on/around October 2017

Description of Responsibilities: Recruitment, enrollment, and retention of qualified graduate students; admissions presentations; interviewing and counseling prospective students and their families; recruitment travel; application review; events for students, families, college and university personnel; yield activities to include a variety of methods and approaches. Evenings and some weekend work will be necessary throughout the year. These activities are specifically designed to meet the enrollment goals of the university, departments, and programs.

Some of these activities include:

  • Serving as an on-campus point of contact for prospective graduate students and will make outbound calls daily to set appointments with prospective enrollees.
  • Providing information to prospective graduate students, parents, campus representatives, and external audiences on admission policies and procedures for the SUNY Oswego Graduate Programs.
  • Pursuing prospective graduate enrollees to determine fit with SUNY Oswego.
  • Conducting follow-up with all applicants to ensure on-going interest and successful enrollment.
  • Maintaining lists of quality prospective enrollees and current students. Contacts referrals to motivate them to visit, call, and start application.
  • Attending recruiting events (e.g., college fairs, career nights, financial aid nights, etc.) to represent and market SUNY Oswego to prospective graduate enrollees.
  • Assisting prospective graduate enrollees to help them complete all required application/enrollment forms.
  • Liaising with graduate program directors/coordinators and support staff.
  • Helping evaluate the status of recruitment efforts, ensuring goals are met, and modifying activities as needed.
  • Collecting, monitoring, and interpreting data about student enrollment indicators and make recommendations.
  • Updating student application accounts when changes are needed to ensure accuracy of applicant status in a timely manner.
  • Answering student application related questions on the phone and via email.

In addition, will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree at time of application
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of computer and web applications as well as social media
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Master’s degree
  • Prior experience in college/university admissions/graduate admissions or closely related area.
