Samford University — Chair, Department of Social Work

Samford University’s School of Public Health invites applicants interested in serving at a Christian university environment to apply for the position of chair of the Department of Social Work. This tenure-track faculty position is a 12-month appointment, and the start date is negotiable. The chair is responsible for maintaining the vision for the department; providing leadership for developing, implementing and establishing an undergraduate degree program; and directing a graduate degree program in social work. The chair also serves as M.S.W. program director. The department has two areas of concentrations: clinical track, which focuses on micro-level practice, counseling and psychotherapy with individuals and families; and the global community development track, which has an emphasis within communities, policies and other macro-level issues. The Council on Social Work Education accredited the Master of Social Work program in 2017.

Qualified candidates will hold a master’s degree in social work, and a doctorate in social work or a related field. A minimum of two years of practice experience is required. Candidates must evidence a history of excellence in teaching, scholarship and service, and be at the rank of associate professor or professor. Ideal candidates will have thorough knowledge of the 2008 and 2015 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards, have held leadership positions within social work departments, be familiar with interprofessional education, have experience with online instruction, and experience or willingness to develop/cultivate relationships with donors, foundations, funders and other stakeholders. A commitment to academic excellence and the ability to work effectively with faculty, students and colleagues is expected. Candidates must be willing to support the Christian mission of Samford University.

Academic rank, tenure and salary are dependent upon academic qualifications, clinical experiences, previous academic teaching experiences, program management experience, and scholarship accomplishments.

The College of Health Sciences is a new and innovative initiative for Samford University. The College includes four schools: Ida Moffett School of Nursing, McWhorter School of Pharmacy, School of Health Professions, and School of Public Health. The College offers multiple degree programs and majors within the health sciences with a focus on interprofessional education that reflects today’s team approach to health care delivery and professional practice.
