The Executive Director reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs and Services, and maintains a flexible yet intentional strategic alignment with Academic Affairs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Building on a team-centered approach, the Executive Director leads a unique distributed, cohesive, and collaborative Career Services Network which provides a seamless connection of career service professionals located in college-based and centralized career centers and hubs across campus. The Network serves students from freshman year through graduation and beyond, as well as engages employer partners by creatively facilitating and supporting their connections with students. Additionally, the Executive Director oversees the Collegiate Employment Research Institute (CERI) that gathers, analyzes, and shares data on national recruitment trends reflecting the hiring market for new college graduates, and the Michigan State University College Advising Corps Program.

The Executive Director provides innovative leadership and vision for a reporting team of 25. As an influential thought leader, the Executive Director regularly connects with and engages other campus colleagues—across student affairs, academic colleges and departments, alumni relations/advancement, service-learning and civic engagement, and others—and external partners who are invested in student success. All work collaboratively to drive positive post-collegiate outcomes, to identify best practices, to promote cross department/division data sharing, to consider curricular enhancements that ensure career readiness, and to generate creative strategies and implement solutions that address the evolving needs and expectations of both students and employers. The Executive Director is a visible and sought-after spokesperson addressing state, regional, national, and global audiences shaping the character and capacity of students through curricular and co-curricular initiatives to enable them to find purpose and build deep disciplinary knowledge coupled with keen ability to communicate across social, cultural, and economic boundaries.

A Master’s degree is required; doctorate preferred. Candidates must have demonstrated significant administrative experience in comprehensive career development programs, talent acquisition efforts, or related areas. Qualified candidates will have a successful record of accomplishment as a leader who understands change and a sophisticated knowledge of the job market and employment trends, a thorough understanding of career exploration and development, service learning and other co-curricular experiences, student employment issues, and the use of technology in delivery of services to students and employers. Successful candidates will have demonstrated ability as a leader and manager with a collaborative, respectful administrative style and positive approach to problem solving. Experience managing significant budgets is required. This Executive Director position requires strategic thinking and planning skills, strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleges, departments, faculty, administrators and students at all levels in a complex, diverse, and multicultural learning environment.

Additional desired qualifications that will be considered in the selection of the Executive Director of the Career Services Network include: demonstrated fundraising experience; proven research and publications in the field of career services; evidence of leadership roles in career related organizations; and experience with leading initiatives for integrating technology into career services.
