US Naval War College — Associate or Full Professor of National Security Affairs (Open Rank)

Join the faculty of one of the nation’s largest and most vibrant graduate teaching departments in the interdisciplinary field of national and international security studies. The Department of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island seeks to fill one vacancy beginning no later than July 2017. We invite applications from exceptionally qualified senior scholars who are highly motivated to teach security studies courses within the resident master degree programs of the world’s oldest graduate institution of professional military education. We are a blended faculty of scholars and practitioners providing professional education to motivated mid-career students who are military and civilian national security professionals from the United States and more than sixty partner countries preparing to become the senior national security leaders of tomorrow.

Candidates must have a significant amount of relevant academic or professional experience that would justify appointment at the rank of either associate professor or professor. An earned Ph.D. is required in a discipline that is directly relevant for at least one of the following fields: 1) international relations and regional security studies; 2) foreign policy analysis and U.S. foreign policy; or, 3) leadership studies. Strongest consideration will be given to candidates with expertise encompassing at least two of these fields. The department is especially interested in building on its strengths at the intersection of leadership studies and national security, and in regional security studies for Europe and Russia. Additional desirable qualifications include: relevant applied professional experience such as in government or international organizations; demonstrated teaching excellence (preferably at the graduate level); a strong scholarly record and future potential for research and publication; and, a demonstrated commitment to collegiality and an interdisciplinary ethos.

Specific responsibilities include: teaching within two distinctive common core graduate-level security studies survey courses; collaborating in the development of common core curricula including individual class sessions; developing and teaching elective courses; scholarly research and publication; and, college service. There is no requirement or expectation to attract external funding. Maximum teaching load excluding optional elective classes is 2/2/0 based on a 10-month trimester system. This involves teaching up to two seminar sections (single preparation) of no more than 16 students in the fall and winter trimesters, with a spring trimester and summer inter-sessional period devoted primarily to research, curriculum development, and college service. All positions are year-round (12-month). Initial appointment is for a multi-year contract that is renewable thereafter on an ongoing basis provided that performance expectations are met. The college is a non-tenure granting institution but has a long record of extremely high levels of faculty retention.

The U.S. Naval War College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges to award master of arts degrees in Defense and Strategic Studies (for our intermediate-rank students), and National Security and Strategic Studies (for our senior-rank students). The college is dual accredited by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to award certification in Joint Professional Military Education Phase 1 & 2.

Salary Considerations
Salary is competitive and is accompanied by a generous federal civil service package that includes health insurance, pension and retirement savings plans (with employer matching contributions), paid vacation and sick leave, and other benefits. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and credentials in accordance with the Department of the Navy Faculty Schedule.
