Program for Academic Career Development in Community Service Settings with Student Loan Repayment 

(Funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the University of Utah School of Dentistry) 

The University of Utah School of Dentistry seeks expressions of interest and applications from individuals who wish to develop clinical and academic career capabilities in dental clinical and primary care community service settings in the interests of public health while also holding appointment as full‐time Clinical Assistant Professor in the School.

Selected individuals will participate with the School of Dentistry in meeting the objectives of HRSA Grant No. T93HP30398 to (a) provide dental care in diverse, community‐based primary care settings, (b) develop cooperative dental care management strategies, (c) leverage integrated patient health records to assess and study patient outcomes, and (d) participate in the School’s faculty development program in primary care and develop modules to train other faculty members, residents ,and students.

For the first five years of their appointment and support under the program, selected individuals will provide clinical dental care in community settings associated with the School for one half of their working time (.50 FTE). For the other .50 FTE during those years they will undertake guided activities designed to develop their academic capabilities as clinical teachers and scholars, under the conditions of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant referenced above.

The School will, in addition to paying full‐time salaries and benefits to the individuals selected into the program, repay student loan debts of each individual selected up to a maximum of $241,000 over a five‐year period. As determined by the HRSA grant, 10% of the loan amount will be re‐payed upon completion of the first year of service, 15% upon completion of the second, 20% upon completion of the third, 25% upon completion of the fourth and 30% upon completion of the fifth.

Individuals who already hold appointment at Clinical Assistant Professor rank within the School are eligible for consideration for program support, as are individuals who do not yet hold such positions. Loan repayment will commence one year after selection into the program and upon completion of the first year of the program, if already holding appointment; or one year after appointment as Assistant Professor concurrent with selection into the program, and upon completion of the first year of the program, if not already holding appointment.

Individuals selected into the program will be required to be licensed to practice dentistry within the State of Utah. Post‐graduate experience in a general practice residency or in a pediatric dentistry or geriatrics residency will be desirable but not required.
