Three African Americans Appointed to New Administrative Posts in Higher Education

Melissa Shivers will be vice president for student life at the University of Iowa. Since June 2014, she has been associate vice chancellor for student life and dean of students at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Dr. Shivers is a graduate of Georgia Southern University, where she majored in broadcast journalism. She holds a master’s degree in education from Clemson University in South Carolina, and a Ph.D. in college student affairs administration from the University of Georgia.

D. Paul Monteiro Jr. is the new chief of staff in the Office of the President at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He was the director of the Community Relations Service at the U.S. Department of Justice.

Monteiro is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where he majored in history. He earned a juris doctorate at Howard University.

Dwight Hamilton was named the inaugural associate vice president of equity at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He has been serving as vice president of inclusion, diversity, and equity at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Earlier in his career, Hamilton was associate vice president of affirmative action at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.

Hamilton is a graduate of Michigan State University, where he majored in criminal justice. He earned a juris doctorate at Wayne State University in Detroit.

In Memoriam: Roscoe Hightower Jr., 1966-2024

Dr. Hightower was a professor of marketing at his alma mater, historically Black Florida A&M University, where he taught for over two decades. He also served the university as the Centennial Eminent Scholar Chair and Professor of Marketing and Facility Management.
