Dartmouth College Scholar Named Curator of African Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art

Ugochukwu-Smooth C. Nzewi, the curator of African art at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, is leaving his post to become the curator of African art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The museum has a collection of more than 300 works of art from sub-Saharan Africa including masks and sculpture from West and Central Africa. The museum has collected African art since the early part of the twentieth century.

A native of Nigeria, Dr. Nzewi has been at Dartmouth since 2013. Earlier, he was a fellow at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington.

Dr. Nzewi is a graduate of the University of Nigeria and holds a diploma from the African Program in Museum and Heritage Studies at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. He earned a Ph.D. in art history from Emory University in Atlanta.
