Job Description:
The Assistant Director plays a critical role in cultivating an inclusive and welcoming campus community by providing developmental advising and support services to Brown University students and groups. The Assistant Director advises, supports, and advocates for student organizations and contributes to University efforts to create an environment that supports and encourages student initiative and leadership development, consistent with Brown’s mission and the principles of Liberal Learning at Brown. The Assistant Director independently leads efforts on major student events, such as Senior Week and manages the operations, programs, and promotion of the Stephen Robert ’62 Campus Center. The Assistant Director actively promotes diversity and social justice through critical conversations with students around leadership and events.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree in student affairs, higher education, event/hospitality management, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of three to five years’ experience in college programming on a residential campus; experience on a college campus required.
  • Demonstrated experience and success working in a multicultural environment with a clear understanding of the issues of diversity and inclusion in both student and workplace settings required.
  • Experience with building operations preferred.
  • Event planning and coordination experience required. Experience managing events with alcohol and/or working with alcohol-related issues on a college campus strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment and success working in a multicultural environment with a critical understanding of social justice issues in both student and workplace settings
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills required.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability and comfort in managing difficult and complex situations arising at events. Ability to collaborate with students and colleagues to develop creative solutions required.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours when necessary.
  • Flexibility to adapt to a changing student life environment is necessary.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse student population is necessary.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., word processing, electronic mail) are required.
  • Ability to move furniture (tables/chairs, push sofas, etc.) and bend/kneel/stoop, as needed to facilitate set-up and coordination of events and maintain safe and functional facilities.
  • Ability to communicate in person and on the phone in emergency and fast-developing situations.
  • Ability to access events and offices in locations requiring the use of steps and movement through crowded student events.
  • Ability to visually analyze developing situations and to monitor/inspect adherence to policies at student events.
  • Ability to work frequent weekends and evenings.
