Two African American Men Appointed to Named Professorships

Kevin L. Shropshire, and expert on the business of sports, has agreed to join the faculty at Arizona State University, where he will be the inaugural Adidas Distinguished Professor of Global Sport. He will also design and lead a new international center on sports research. Professor Shropshire will hold a joint appointment in the W.P. Carey School of Business and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

For the past 30 years, Professor Shropshire has taught in the Wharton School and the department of Africana studies at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is the author of 12 books including In Black and White: Race and Sports in America (New York University Press, 1996). Professor Shropshire is a graduate of Stanford University and Columbia Law School.

Thomas Wilkins will be joining the faculty at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Beginning August 1, he will hold the Henry A. Upper Chair of Orchestral Conducting. At the current time, Professor Wilkins is the music director of the Omaha Symphony. While serving on the faculty at Indiana University, Professor Wilkins will continue in his present role at the Omaha Symphony through the 2020-21 season.

Professor Wilkins has taught at North Park University in Chicago, the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Professor Wilkins is a graduate of the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music.

Quenon Endowed Chair, and vice provost for graduate education at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
