Jarvis Christian College to Open a Satellite Campus in Dallas

Jarvis Christian College, the historically Black educational institution in Hawkins, Texas, has announced that it will open an “instructional site” in Dallas, about 100 miles to the west of its main campus.

Jarvis Christian Institute was founded in 1913 by the Disciples of Christ. Today, Jarvis Christian College enrolls about 850 students. African Americans make up 83 percent of the student body, according to the latest U.S. Department of Education figures.

The new site at the Southwest Center Mall in Dallas will offer courses in criminal justice, business management, religion, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Classes will begin this fall.

Lester C. Newman, president of Jarvis Christian College, stated that “it is our goal to expand educational opportunities for adult learners interested in completing their college degree. I am honored that Jarvis Christian College has become part of the Dallas community.” Dr. Newman became president of Jarvis Christian College in 2012. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in political science from Atlanta University.
