Lecturer Position Available

English Department
Position No. 00050596
Lecturer in Discernment & Discourse Program

The Department of English invites applications for a non-tenure track Lecturer in its Discernment & Discourse program beginning in the fall.  The Discernment & Discourse program offers a three-semester sequence centered on the development of skills in composition and rhetorical analysis and serves as the writing requirement and foundation of academic writing for most SMU students.  This Lecturer position entails teaching a 4/4 load in the program’s English as a Second Language (ESL) track, as well as contributing to curriculum design. A one-section schedule reduction in exchange for tutoring hours in the Writing Center is a possibility, based on department needs each semester.  An educational background in TESOL and experience teaching ESL at the post-secondary level are essential, as are the ability and willingness to develop and teach dynamic courses at the beginning, intermediate, and upper levels of the program.  Applicants are expected to have an understanding of current research that informs pedagogical best practices for ESL students.  We welcome applicants with a Ph.D., ABD, or master’s degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, second language writing, or a closely related field.

Applications may be submitted electronically (PDF format preferred) or by mail and should include a cover letter, a letter discussing teaching experience and pedagogical philosophy, samples of syllabuses, writing assignments and graded papers, complete curriculum vitae, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation may be scanned and sent as PDF files.  Please send all documents to:
