Five African Americans Appointed to New Administrative Posts in Higher Education

Karen M. Carty is the new assistant director of athletics for marketing and communications at Grambling State University in Louisiana. She had been serving as assistant athletics director for marketing at South Carolina State University. Earlier, she was sports information director at Baltimore City Community College in Maryland.

Carty is a summa cum laude graduate of Norfolk State University in Virginia. She holds a master’s degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama.

Anthony L. Holloman was appointed vice president for university advancement at Fort Valley State University in Georgia. He will also serve as executive director of the Fort Valley State University Foundation. He has been serving as vice president for institutional advancement at Wiley College in Texas.

Dr. Holloman is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he majored in communication and media studies. He earned an educational doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ray Trapp was named director for external affairs at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. Since 2012, Trapp has been a commissioner for Guilford County in North Carolina.

Trapp holds an associate’s degree from Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland and a bachelor’s degree in business management from American Intercontinental University in Atlanta.

Roman Banks was appointed director of athletics at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has been serving in the post on an interim basis for the past 18 months. He has also served as the head coach of the men’s basketball team at the university. Banks will no longer serve as basketball coach.

Banks is a graduate of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Before joining the coaching ranks at Southern University, he spent eight years as a coach at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.

Robert Kelly was named vice president and special assistant to the president of Loyola University Maryland. He has been serving as chief of staff at Union College in Schenectady, New York.

Dr. Kelly is a 1994 graduate of Loyola University Maryland. He holds a master’s degree in higher education student affairs administration from the University of Vermont and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.

In Memoriam: Norman B. Anderson, 1955-2024

Dr. Anderson was the assistant vice president for research and academic affairs at Florida State University at the time of his death. He had an extensive career in clinical psychology, which led him to become the first African American chief executive officer of the American Psychological Association.
