Alumnus Gregory Vincent Named President of Hobart and William Smith Colleges

The board of trustees of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, has named alumnus Gregory Vincent as president. Hobart College was founded in 1822. William Smith College was founded as a school for women in 1908. The colleges shared the same faculty, administration and facilities but separate classes were held for men and women. By the 1940s, women and men took classes together. Today, women are 49 percent of the 2,350-member student body. African Americans make up 5 percent of the student body.

Currently, Dr. Vincent is the W.K. Kellogg Professor of Community College Leadership, professor of law, and vice president for diversity and community engagement at the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the faculty at the University of Texas in 2005. Earlier in his career, Professor Vincent taught and held administrative positions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Louisiana State University, and the University of Oregon. He is a former assistant attorney general for the state of Ohio.

Dr. Vincent is a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science and Hobart College, where he majored in history and economics and was a member of the basketball and cross country teams. He earned a law degree at Ohio State University and a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania.

  1. This is a real treat to see someone give back to their alma mater by assuming the mantel of leadership. President -elect Vincent is a true scholar and a born leader, he is Grand Sire Archon-elect(President -elect) of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, , founded in 1904 is the oldest black Greek organization in the world. He is passionate about youth especially young black males.

As a former professor of President Elect Vincent when he was a law student at The Ohio State University and someone who has followed his career, Hobart and William Smith College has hit a home run. Greg is a true educator who is devoted to the education of young people and he is passionate about equality. I am more than proud and more than happy to see this selection.
