The School of Public Health at West Virginia University is seeking a chair for the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences to provide academic leadership. This is a unique opportunity to shape and expand innovative Occupational and Environmental teaching and research for a dynamic department in a diverse academic environment. The Department includes 11 full-time faculty members and currently offers the MPH and PhD in Public Health, as well as an occupational medicine clinic and residency.
The Occupational and Environmental Health faculty are highly collaborative and productive with expertise across a range of subject areas including: air pollution and inhalation toxicology in several settings, bioinformatics, biomarkers, disaster response and prevention, nanotoxicity, occupational illness and injury prevention, work organization and culture, and clinical quality improvement. The faculty currently partner with many groups, including the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, the WV Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the WVU Injury Control Research Center, the WV Prevention Research Center, the WVU School of Medicine, NIOSH, WVU Safety and Health Extension, and the WV Bureau for Public Health.
We seek applicants with an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree in a field aligned with the Department’s mission, a sustained record of externally funded collaborative research, an excellent teaching record, experience in mentoring junior faculty and graduate students, and a record of administrative experience and budget management. The Chair is expected to provide active leadership for the department’s curricula and growing research portfolio, as well as manage the department’s personnel and resources. The successful candidate will demonstrate accomplishments sufficient to qualify for hire at the rank of tenured Professor, will have excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, and will have the vision and ability to raise the national and international stature of the department. Salary and start-up package is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The CEPH-accredited School of Public Health currently has 53 faculty members and over 200 students enrolled in its MPH programs, an MS degree in School Health Education, the MS degree in Biostatistics, and a Public Health Sciences PhD program and a new undergraduate major in Public Health. The School is located at a comprehensive health sciences center with collaborative relationships with the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. The neighboring National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) campus offers valuable training for WVU students in applied public health, including possible participation in Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) investigations and Health Hazard Evaluations. The Chair will have the unique opportunity to expand existing research collaborations with NIOSH through the development of a more formal partnership.
