Walter E. Williams to Receive the $250,000 Bradley Prize

Walter E. Williams, the John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, has been selected as one of four recipients of the 2017 Bradley Prize from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation in Milwaukee.

The Bradley Prizes formally recognize individuals “of extraordinary talent and dedication who have made contributions of excellence in areas consistent with The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation’s mission.” The mission of the foundation is to support the free enterprise system and limited government. Professor Williams will be honored at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., on April 6. The prize comes with a $250,000 award.

Dr. Williams had taught at George Mason University since 1980. He writes a syndicated newspaper column and is the author of 10 books including the autobiography Up From the Projects (Hoover Institution Press, 2010) and American Contempt for Liberty (Hoover Institution Press, 2015).

Professor Williams is a graduate of California State University, Los Angeles. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Ringgold was a mixed media artist, best known for her narrative quilts which centered around African American and women's representation. She was a professor emerita of art with the University of California, San Diego where she taught for 15 years.
