Position Description:
The Department of Nutritional Sciences (NS) seeks an energetic faculty member to join a growing program with 17 full time faculty. The successful applicant will contribute to the university’s mission through teaching, research, and service by serving as a faculty member in our accredited graduate programs that include approximately 65 students in doctoral and master’s degrees and dietetic internship. NS faculty also have the opportunity to teach in the cutting-edge and growing undergraduate program of over 700 students, which includes an accredited didactic program in dietetics. NS faculty engage in service activities with the department, college, university, community, and the profession.

Minimal Qualification:
PhD, or other doctoral level degree in nutrition or related fields and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential required. Candidates are expected to be on a path towards a nationally established and recognized research program; demonstrate high potential to secure extramural research grants and engage in externally funded collaborative research projects across the college and university, and with local/regional and national partners including government, corporate, and philanthropic funding agencies; and to have demonstrated teaching acumen, leadership, and potential to train and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

Potential teaching foci for the position include, but are not limited to, health promotion and wellness, sports nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, lifecyle nutrition, and other courses related to the applicant’s expertise.

Potential research foci for the position include, but are not limited to, nutrition as it relates to the prevention and/or treatment of chronic diseases including obesity, clinical nutrition, sports nutrition, nutritional physiology & metabolism. Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere are expected.


  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, face to face and online.
  • Experience with Blackboard and online course development desirable.
  • Mentor MS and PhD students and assist in recruitment of graduate students, involving coordination among Department, College, and Graduate School.
  • Develop and maintain a high impact scholarly research program via publications and external funding.
  • Be able to work in multidisciplinary teams utilizing cutting edge tools in research
  • Engage in outreach activities related to their research program and perform service to the department, college, university, and the profession through involvement and leadership in national and or international professional associations.
  • Engage in departmental, college and university service.

This is a unique opportunity to join a newly formed and expanding department that is committed to educating future leaders in nutritional sciences, and promoting basic, translational, clinical, and community research and teaching excellence. We offer several infrastructure and collaborative resources within the department and College of Human Sciences (COHS) and the Texas Tech System:

  • The department of Nutritional Sciences in COHS has several faculty with strong basic, clinical/translational and community research programs focusing on obesity and co-morbid conditions, clinical nutrition, nutritional biochemistry, nano-nutrition, adipocyte biology, and community-level interventions.
  • A strong program with a Nutrition/Dietetics undergraduate option and a Dietetic Internship/Master’s Degree Program that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Other undergraduate options are Pre-professional Health Careers; Nutrition, Health, and Wellness; and Secondary Teacher Certification in Hospitality, Nutrition, and Food Science. A new online MS in Nutrition and Dietetics was approved in March 2016 by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
  • The Department of Nutritional Sciences houses the Obesity Research Cluster (ORC) to foster and enhance collaborations in interdisciplinary obesity-related research. Research conducted by ORC members includes both basic, clinical and community research that will inform and advance strategies to prevent, treat and reduce obesity and its metabolic complications. ORC researchers use diverse state of the art approaches to address the complexity of obesity from the biological, behavioral, environmental and societal aspects. Ongoing research ranges from cellular and molecular studies, to animal models of obesity and metabolic disorders and human subjects for clinical interventions as well as community- based participatory research. The ultimate goal of the ORC is to increase productive collaborations within the TTU System and other state and national partnerships, increase student training in interdisciplinary research related to obesity and other associates diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.   • Nutritional Sciences faculty collaborate with the TTU International Center for Food Industry Excellence (ICFIE) to provide innovation, research, and technology transfer throughout all aspects of the food continuum to meet today’s consumer needs, domestically and internationally (http://www.depts.ttu.edu/icfie/home.php). NS faculty teach classes that are part of an online global food security graduate program.
  • Our newly formed Nutrition & Metabolic Health Initiative (NMHI) is focused on expanding our clinical research facilities and faculty to support our mission to become a nationally recognized clinical research institution.
  • The Texas Tech University Health Science Center offers a wide range of collaborative opportunities in health sciences.
  • Opportunities for partnerships with schools, AgriLife Extension and other community partners interested in community nutrition.
