The Ohio State University — Regional Director, Operations, Southwest Region, Ohio State University Extension

The Regional Director, Operations, is to provide leadership to the Extension operations within the Southwest Region comprised of 19 counties, including all matters affecting personnel, finance, public relations and business operations. The Regional Director, Operations, works collaboratively with the OSU Extension administrative cabinet and Extension employees, numerous advisory committee members, volunteer stakeholders, public officials and other community leaders and volunteers in the region. This position reports to the Associate Dean / Director, Ohio State University Extension; The Regional Director serves as a member of Extension administrative cabinet and communicates decisions and policies to county personnel pertinent to their functions and responsibilities; Directs the regional administrative office; Represents Ohio State University Extension and develops and maintains effective working relationships with county commissioners, local funders, appropriate agencies, organizations, groups and individuals, including the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) experiment stations and regional campuses; Interacts with the Office of Government Relations in the coordination, training and oversight of county-based professionals’ contacts with elected officials; Supports and enhances Extension’s commitment to equal opportunity/ affirmative action in employment and programming for diverse audiences; Aligns efforts with The Ohio State University Discovery Themes (Health and Wellness; Food Production & Security; and Energy and the Environment) and Ohio State University Extension Impact Areas (Health and Wellness; Job Skills and Careers; Thriving Across the Life Span; Sustainable Food Systems; Engaged Ohioans, Vibrant Communities; and Environmental Quality); Provides leadership in selection and placement of Extension educators and county Extension directors, including the support for onboarding of new educators and county Extension directors; Coordinates the human resources functions in the region with OSU Extension’s human resources unit including onboarding, mentoring, and determining appropriate staffing for each unit; Provides personnel support to the county units including: interpreting and implementing OSU and OSU Extension human resources policies; serving as immediate supervisor to all educators and county Extension directors; providing timely coaching and feedback to educators; and leading the performance management process; Mentors and coaches Extension educators and county Extension directors in effective performance; Responsible for annual performance appraisals of Extension educators and county Extension directors; Advises Extension personnel regarding matters of professional and personal concern; Guides and supports the development and preparation of Extension program plans and reports as reflected in the annual reporting system.

Education and Experience:
Required: Master’s degree required, doctoral degree preferred. The successful candidate must possess effective communication skills (verbal and written), excellent mediation and problem solving/conflict management skills, and be proficient with computers and technology. Extension knowledge, program development and evaluation, leadership and administrative skills, and supervisory experience. Experience with mentoring/development of staff. Desired: Experience and success in grant and contract funding, coaching and mentoring, and public issues education desired.  Experience with Extension.

This position requires extensive and frequent travel within the region/state. The successful candidate will be required to complete and submit fingerprint and criminal background checks before her/his start date. A university owned vehicle will be provided for business use in accordance with IRS regulations.
