Johns Hopkins University seeks a collaborative, strategic and results-oriented leader to serve as Vice Provost for Diversity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer (VP/CDO). Johns Hopkins has created the new position of VP/CDO to provide vision and intellectual leadership and to lead, coordinate, and facilitate the university’s efforts in diversity and inclusion. Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the VP/CDO will co-chair the Johns Hopkins Institutions Diversity Leadership Council (DLC). The VP/CDO will work in partnership with the deans and other campus leaders to position diversity as one of the university’s key competitive advantages, to center diversity work in the mission of the university, and to capitalize on the varied ways diversity and inclusion can be embedded in the university’s curriculum, infrastructure, policies, and programs. The VP/CDO will have primary responsibility for ensuring that the university meets its commitments in the Roadmap and for engaging with faculty, staff, and students from across the institution to advance the diversity agenda outlined therein. The VP/CDO serves on the Provost’s Leadership group and works closely with senior administrators, including the Vice Provost for Institutional Equity, and operational colleagues, to advance a proactive agenda and respond to emerging issues around diversity and inclusion within and across the schools. The VP/CDO will partner with the Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer for Johns Hopkins Medicine to develop and coordinate diversity efforts between the university and Johns Hopkins Medicine. S/he will have primary responsibility for ensuring that the university meets its commitments in the Roadmap and for engaging with faculty, staff, and students from across the institution to advance the diversity agenda outlined therein. The VP/CDO will serve and partner with each of these constituencies to set priorities and short-term objectives while tracking progress towards long-term goals.

The University seeks a thoughtful and energetic leader with a broad vision for the role of diversity and inclusion in achieving institutional excellence. The successful candidate will have a track record of accomplishment in leading institutional initiatives, building programs, and promoting diversity in a complex organizational setting. S/he will have a thorough knowledge of research and best practices around campus diversity, its benefits, and the conditions that must be in place to achieve those benefits. Experience working in a decentralized academic environment with demonstrated success in strengthening diversity and inclusion through proactive recruitment, training, and change management will be critical to success. The VP/CDO will have demonstrated skills in collecting and using data to assess programs and increase shared accountability; a supervisory record that demonstrates collaborative strengths in coaching and mentoring, managing project development teams, and improving productivity; and the ability to form coalitions and inspire others to take actions. S/he must possess an advanced degree and the ability to manage institutional change in a complex, academic environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate cross-cultural competencies, including strong emotional intelligence, influencing skills, and the ability to engage and build relationships with university constituencies and underrepresented communities. S/he will have strong communication and conflict-resolution skills needed to navigate politically-charged situations to resolve problems, build consensus, and reconcile competing interests.
