Reporting to the Dean of Westhampton College, the Assistant Dean provides student support and coordinates the College’s student life functions, with responsibilities in individual and group advising, conduct, College programming, communications, and participation in various campus-wide committees. The Assistant Dean works closely with the Dean in support of the College’s operation and administration of duties to achieve the College’s strategic goals. The Assistant Dean also collaborates with Richmond College and other campus partners, and serves as liaison with several divisional offices, working together to meet the University’s objective of a thriving and inclusive community.

Student Support Responsibilities:

  • Works as part of the dean’s office team to provide essential services and support to students and other members of the University community, including maintaining regular office hours and sustaining a strong presence in the College and on campus.
  • Provides general advising and meets with students experiencing academic, personal, and/or health problems including providing guidance on academic policies and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively with divisional and University partners to provide support to students with concerns involving sexual and relationship violence.
  • Provides academic advising and support to assigned first-year and sophomore undeclared students, including but not limited to academic performance, major acquisition, course selection, and understanding general education and graduation requirements.
  • Serves as a University Conduct Officer, with responsibility to assign charges of University standards, adjudicate administrative hearings, and impose appropriate sanctions.
  • Serves as the advisor to the Westhampton College Student Conduct Council.
  • Provides support and advice to parents/guardians and concerned faculty.
  • Provides support and assistance when necessary in response to individual or campus crisis situations.
  • Participates in on-call duty rotation and works closely with both College deans’ offices to provide support to students.
  • Keeps abreast of professional developments in the fields of student development, women, genders, and identity, and theories of inclusion, through conference attendance, scholarly reading and research; participation in regional and national organizations, and other mechanisms as able.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

College Programming, Communications, and Outreach:

  • Assists and makes recommendations to the dean for strategic planning in both long- and short-term goal-setting, and communication and outreach initiatives.
  • Under the direction of the dean, plans and implements initiatives in support of the College’s mission, including campus conferences and speakers, community building, and inclusion programming.
  • Working with Richmond College, responsible for complementary and/or joint programming on gender and inclusivity with a focus on women’s education, support for historically underrepresented populations, LGBTQIA+ advocacy and support, and social justice.
  • Collaborates with the Center for Student Involvement and other divisional and University partners in the development of campus-wide programming.
  • In collaboration with divisional and University partners, plans, coordinates, and expands sexual and relationship violence awareness education and prevention campaigns.
  • Represents the College and division on University and professional organizations, associations, committees and/or by presenting programs at professional meetings and conferences as appropriate; serves as the Dean of Westhampton College’s designee as needed.
  • Responsible for the social media strategy for the College, including managing social media presence and social media campaigns, as well as working with other content managers to integrate social media content, including campus-wide calendars and publicity.
  • Coordinate and enhance the College’s outreach and routine communications with parents, families, and guardians, as well as the College’s event-specific programming such as Family Weekend and Commencement.
  • Coordinate and enhance the College’s outreach and routine communications with alums, including Homecoming, Reunion Weekend, and College-specific events.
  • Liaises with University Communications, Office of Alumni & Career Services, and other divisional and University partners to achieve communications and outreach goals.
  • Manages the College’s programming budget; produces regular and ad hoc budget reports as required; provides budgetary statuses and recommendations to the dean.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Collaboration and Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Serves as liaison to the Director of Residence Life and Undergraduate Student Housing (DRL) and Richmond College in matters related to student life, including the functional supervision of two area coordinators who work in a 24/7 environment.
  • Supervises and evaluates one administrative professional.
  • In collaboration with other Student Development offices, coordinates academic and student enrichment programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Comprehensive knowledge in the areas of college student development theory, best practices in student affairs, and student conduct is required; training and experience in women’s studies and gender and identity theory and practice is preferred.
  • Comprehensive experience and understanding of conflict management, problem solving, crisis management, supervision, time management, project management, and budget management is required.
  • Knowledge of applicable professional standards, policies, procedures, and legislation related to the areas of student life and student conduct is required.
  • Proven ability to lead and demonstrated excellence in decision-making and judgment in routine and crisis situations.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a dynamic, team-oriented, and collaborative environment is required.
  • Ability to thrive and manage effectively multiple tasks, deadlines, and priorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills are required; demonstrated event planning and presentation skills are highly desired.
  • Computer literacy, including word processing, spreadsheet, email/calendar software, and web-based applications, is required; understanding of current social media platforms used by college students is required; general knowledge or experience with Microsoft Office, Banner/BannerWeb, Maxient, and StarRez is desired.


  • A master’s degree in higher education administration or related field is required.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of full-time experience in Student Development at the college level is required, with progressive responsibilities; 5 to 7 years highly preferred; experience with student conduct is desired.
