Higher Education Grants or Gifts of Interest to African Americans

Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

Southern University, the historically Black educational institution in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, received a $100,000 grant from Apple Inc. to hold a summer camp on robotics. Students from middle and high schools will spend five weeks during the summer on the Southern University campus learning about robotics and sensor technology.

Historically Black Morehouse College in Atlanta received a $1 million donation from Newall Brands Inc. to support STEM education programs at the college.

The Lincoln University, a historically Black educational institution in Pennsylvania, received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for efforts to preserve the family histories of descendants of Hinsonville or Lincoln University Village, an early African American settlement of farmers near the university’s campus.

The Association of American Colleges and Universities received a $520,000 grant from Newman’s Own Foundation to fund the creation of Centers for Truth: Racial Hearing & Transformation at colleges and universities across the United States. The funds will establish a Truth Racial Hearing & Transformation Institute at the association. Ten centers will be created on campuses across the country.

Prairie View A&M University, a historically Black educational institution in Texas, received a five-year, $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation for programs to increase retention rates of students in undergraduate engineering degree programs.

The University of Alabama Birmingham received a five-year, $16.6 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to support the university’s Comprehensive Cancer Center’s efforts to reduce racial health disparities. Tuskegee University in Alabama and the Morehouse School of Medicine in Georgia, both historically Black institutions, will participate in the grant project.

Three Black Leaders Appointed to Diversity Positions at Colleges and Universities

The three scholars appointed to admininstraive positions relating to diversity are Marsha McGriff at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, JeffriAnne Wilder at Oberlin College in Ohio, and Branden Delk at Illinois State University.
