Texas Southern University is seeking applications and nominations for its next Dean, Barbara Jordan – Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs.
TSU was formally established in 1927 with a mission to establish a credible college for African American students. In 1973, the state designated TSU as “a special purpose institution of higher education for urban programming.” Ascribing to the global implications of its urban mission, the University focuses on high quality teaching, research and public service as a means of preparing students for leadership roles in the urban communities of our state, nation and world.
Today, TSU is one of the nation’s largest HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) with over 8,800 students enrolled. Nestled upon a sprawling 150-acre campus, TSU has served as a cornerstone for developing the greatest potential in leaders from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds by providing a first-class educational experience. The University offers over 120 Baccalaureate, Master’s and Doctoral degree programs in nine schools and colleges. It features an impressive array of educational programs, a diverse faculty, 80-plus student organizations, and an alumni network comprised of educators, entrepreneurs, public servants, lawyers, artists, and more, many of whom are change agents on the local, national and global stage.
One of only four independent public universities in Texas (those not affiliated with any of Texas’ six public university systems), TSU is the only HBCU in Texas recognized as one of America’s Top Colleges by Forbes magazine. TSU is the leading producer of college degrees to African Americans and Hispanics in Texas and ranks 4th in the United States in doctoral and professional degrees conferred to African Americans. The university is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and holds assets exceeding $250 million.
Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, the Dean is the chief administrative officer and senior academic leader of the college. The Dean is responsible for aligning the college with the mission, vision, values and strategic priorities of the university and leads the college in assuring that the university’s commitment to social justice and diversity is reflected in the college’s work environment, policies, curriculum and delivery. Texas Southern University supports a shared governance environment and the Dean works within that context. The dean also serves on the Deans’ Council.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Knowledge of curriculum, current standards, practices, and trends. Sufficient experience in transforming programs comparable to those in political science, public affairs, public administration, administration of justice (criminal justice), urban planning, and environmental policy to achieve their goals through effective and creative work with the faculty, staff and students of the school, and the leadership team of a university, including the provost and other deans. Knowledge and ability to provide leadership in obtaining training, program, and research grants. Ability to articulate a vision for the school. Proficiency in all information technology as reflected in skills and experience with relevant IT and distance and on-line educational platforms.
A terminal degree from an accredited institution in a field of study within the School of Public Affairs. Must meet teaching and scholarship qualifications to merit appointment to the rank of full professor with tenure.
