Rhode Island School of Design — Vice President for Enrollment Management

Founded in 1877, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is one of the oldest and best-known colleges of art and design. RISD is recognized for its accomplished faculty of artists, designers, and scholars, the breadth of its specialized facilities, and its immersive approach to studio-based learning. Each year approximately 2,400 students from around the world pursue a creative, studio-based education at RISD, which offers rigorous bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in 19 architecture, design, fine arts, and art education majors complemented and animated by essential study in the liberal arts. The RISD Museum, with the third largest college or university museum collection in the country (over 90,000 works of fine and decorative art), is an integral part of the institution and a resource for the College and the larger community. RISD has played a vital role in preparing students for leadership roles in all sectors, as demonstrated through the outstanding and varied accomplishments of its 26,000 alumni. The College is located in Providence, Rhode Island, which offers its own vibrant art scene and is conveniently located between two other major cultural centers: Boston and New York.

The Position
The Vice President of Enrollment Management (VPEM) provides leadership, vision, strategic direction, and expertise for all enrollment initiatives and has primary responsibility for developing, articulating and implementing a dynamic, strategic, entrepreneurial, and data-based enrollment plan that is aligned with RISD’s mission, strengths and ambitions. The VPEM directs all areas related to enrollment management including research, student recruitment, admissions, and student financial services, and ensures best practices are implemented by training, developing, and supervising staff in each of these functional areas. As a College that prides itself on innovation and global reach, RISD seeks an enrollment leader who will grasp the distinct nature of this institution and employ both traditional and innovative means to expand the College’s enrollment effectiveness so as to attract, select, enroll, and retain an exceptionally talented, and internationally, culturally, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse undergraduate and graduate student body. The Vice President reports directly to the President and works closely with the Provost, Academic Affairs, chairs of the various departments and programs, and the Office of Student Affairs. As a member of the President’s cabinet, the VPEM will work with senior leadership to analyze and understand the competitive landscape of higher education in order to set enrollment targets and to support student access.

RISD seeks to bring a new level of college-wide collaboration, analysis, and strategic decision making to student enrollment at the College. The new Vice President will be presented with the opportunity to make a significant impact and will be expected initially to assess the enrollment challenges and opportunities for RISD, and conduct an institution-wide and rigorous conversation about vision, goals, strategy, and tradeoffs. The VPEM will then envision, create, execute, and constantly evolve a dynamic, ambitious, integrated, and analytically informed enrollment management effort that reflects RISD’s distinctiveness and is guided by short- and long-term goals.

As a leader both internally and externally, the VPEM will be a highly visible and collaborative partner. The Vice President must build and maintain excellent relationships across the College, ensuring that there is abundant communication about, support for, and engagement with, a sustainable enrollment plan.

RISD seeks a professional who is a bold and pioneering leader, willing to question and seek constant improvement, take calculated risks, and partner broadly across the College in conceptualizing and evaluating possibilities. This is a transformational role and the opportunity for impact is significant.

A bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) and documented leadership experience in progressively significant management roles in higher education admissions, enrollment management, and financial aid are required. Evidence of superior oral, written, and presentation skills.
