In Memoriam: Charles Dwight Lahr

C. Dwight Lahr, professor of mathematics emeritus at Dartmouth College, died on December 26 in Lyme, New Hampshire. Dr. Lahr first joined the Dartmouth faculty in 1975 as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 1981 and assumed the roles of associate dean of faculty for sciences and dean of graduate studies. He was named full professor and dean of the faculty in 1984. Dr. Lahr was the first African American to be named a tenured professor of mathematics in the Ivy League.

Dr. Lahr retired from teaching in 2014. He graduated from Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1966. Professor Lahr earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in mathematics at Syracuse University.
