Three Black Scholars Honored With Prestigious Awards

barabinoGilda Barabino, Berg Professor and the dean of the Grove School of Engineering at the City College of New York, has been chosen to receive the 2016 William W. Grimes Award for Excellence in Chemical Engineering from AIChE, the American Institute of Chemical Engineering. She came to CCNY in 2013 after teaching at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Barabino is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans and holds a Ph.D. from Rice University in Houston.

fullerKarla Smith Fuller, an assistant professor of biology at Guttman Community College in New York City, received the Two-Year College Biology Teaching Award for Excellence in Biology Education from the National Association of Biology Teachers.

Dr. Fuller is a graduate of Texas Southern University in Houston. She holds a Ph.D. in cancer biology from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

astatkeYacob Astatke, interim associate dean for undergraduate studies in the School of Engineering at Morgan State University in Baltimore, is the recipient of the Diversity Award from Airbus Group and the Global Engineering Deans Council. He was  honored for his work to improve engineering education in Africa at a ceremony in South Korea.

Before joining the faculty at Morgan State University, Dr. Astatke was a professor of engineering at Hawassa University in Ethiopia.
