Tennessee State’s Collegiate Police Academy

tsuHistorically Black Tennessee State University in Nashville in conjunction with the Nashville Metro Police department has established the Collegiate Citizens Police Academy. Twenty-seven students are participating. They are undergoing five weeks of training in police work and the criminal justice system. The students are participating in mock crime events to learn how police respond to specific situations. The students are also “riding along” with police officers when they are on routine patrols.

Steve Anderson, chief of Nashville Metro Police, said that “everyone has a citizens police academy. But as far as I know, this is the first collegiate police academy anywhere in the United States.”

Mitch Kornberg, a sergeant with Nashville Metro Police, added that “the main goal of this program is about perception and to use it as a recruiting tool.”
