Job Description
Reporting to the Chancellor, the Provost oversees academic strategic planning and evaluation, and administration of a budget of over $81 million in academic and support units. The University has $35 million in externally sponsored projects and more than $147 million in student aid. Directly reporting to the Provost are seven Deans; the Associate Provosts for Program Development and Research; Assistant Provost for Academic Innovation & Effectiveness; Director of Institutional Research; Executive Director for International Affairs; and the Associate Vice Chancellors for Enrollment Management and Information Technology Services. The Provost works closely with the Director of the East St. Louis Center, which includes Head Start, a Charter High School, social services, healthcare delivery and college access programs. Additional areas of responsibility include leadership in academic planning, new program development, assessment, educational outreach, faculty development, institutional research, honors program, instructional services, international educational partnerships, retention, and the undergraduate research and creative activities program. At SIUE, the Provost is a highly visible embodiment of the institution’s culture of cooperation and collaboration between academic and non-academic units.

SIUE desires a Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs who will provide strong, visionary leadership while working collaboratively and transparently within a shared governance environment.

Responsibilities of the Provost

  • Provide visionary leadership in adapting to changes in higher education
  • Support the University’s vision of academic prominence, both nationally and globally, through innovative and interdisciplinary programs
  • Improve and facilitate high-impact community engagement projects
  • Advise the Chancellor on academic matters, working collegially with Deans, faculty, senior staff, and others with a commitment to shared governance
  • Provide leadership in the administration and development of high quality academic programs, and the delivery of an excellent educational experience
  • Expand the use of learning technology and online programming
  • Expand institutional commitment and involvement in international education
  • Oversee the academic integrity of the institution
  • Develop, allocate, and manage the academic budget
  • Develop a vision for enhancing higher education opportunities at the East St. Louis Center
  • Support the research infrastructure to advance University scholarship and enhance the environment for externally-sponsored projects and philanthropy
  • Provide leadership and vision for teaching and research centers
  • Oversee accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission and other accrediting agencies
  • Facilitate and coordinate academic initiatives with Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) and the Southern Illinois University (SIU) system
  • Provide leadership in integrated enrollment management including recruitment and retention of exceptional and diverse undergraduate, graduate, and professional students
  • Actively promote and support SIUE’s institutional commitment to a diverse and inclusive campus community
  • Support and sustain the partnership with Student Affairs in ensuring student retention and success
  • Serve as an integral and collaborative member of the University’s senior leadership team, the Chancellor’s Council


  • An earned doctorate or terminal degree and credentials to merit tenure as a professor in an academic discipline offered at the University
  • Progressive administrative experience with a record of achievement in successive senior academic administrative positions above the Department Chair level
  • Evidence of community engagement
  • Evidence of success in shared governance
  • A record of academic leadership, with demonstrated ability to plan strategically, prioritize appropriately, and follow through to completion
  • A record of success in building/managing academic programs and support services, experience in personnel decision-making, and demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse constituencies
  • A record of success in resource management, especially within a climate of fiscal challenge
  • Evidence of facilitating quality teaching, research, and service
  • Demonstrated integrity with excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Salary Range & Terms
This position offers outstanding benefits and a senior level salary. The new Provost should be prepared to begin July 1, 2017.
