New Faculty Assignments for a Trio of Black Scholars

bentley-edwardsKeisha Bentley-Edwards was appointed an assistant professor of general internal medicine in the School of Medicine at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She will also direct the Health Equity Working Group in the university’s Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity. Dr. Bentley-Edwards previously served on the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Bentley-Edwards is a graduate of Howard University and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

cedricpowellCedric Merlin Powell, a professor at the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville, has been given the added duties as faculty grievance officer at the university. In this role, Professor Powell will assistant faculty members in dispute resolutions with the university’s administration.

Professor Powell has been on the faculty at the University of Louisville since 1993. He is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio, where he majored in politics. Professor Powell earned his law degree at New York University, where he was the managing editor of The NYU Review of Law and Social Change.

c_steeleCatherine Knight Steele is a new assistant professor of communication at the University of Maryland, College Park. She will also serve as the inaugural director of the Synergies Among Digital Humanities and African American History and Culture initiative at the university. She was an assistant professor of journalism and media at Colorado State University.

Dr. Steele is a graduate of the University of Illinois. She holds a master’s degree in multicultural communication from DePaul University in Chicago and a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
