The School of Engineering at The University of Kansas (SOE; engr.ku.edu) seeks to add an accomplished senior faculty member to serve as its inaugural Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI). Successful candidates are expected to be leaders in advancing diversity and inclusion for faculty, students, and staff, and also contribute to the development of academic and research programs in which women and underrepresented minorities are fully represented. The successful candidate should be appointable as a tenured, full Professor in any relevant engineering department within SOE. Applicants are expected to have earned a doctorate, or equivalent, in engineering, computer science, or a closely related scientific discipline.
The Associate Dean for DEI will be the School’s leader in the strategies, policies, and administration for matters of diversity, equity & inclusion; assists/advises the Dean on inclusion policies and strategies; serves as the primary administrative contact for these matters in the School. In particular, the Associate Dean for DEI is responsible for leading diversity-related recruitment/retention, programming, outreach, community engagement, proposal development, fundraising, and evaluation efforts across the School for students, faculty, and staff. The Associate Dean will also develop/oversee diversity education and training, climate assessments, metrics, evaluations, and communications. The Associate Dean will also collaborate on campus-wide diversity initiatives. The Associate Dean will be aided in this role by a dedicated staff member whom they will supervise.
SOE is in the midst of a significant expansion in students, faculty, and facilities supported by a variety of resources, including the State of Kansas through the University Engineering Initiative Act. This position is one of 30 new faculty lines provided as part of that expansion.
The Associate Dean position will be a five-year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal. The Associate Dean is appointed by and reports to the Dean of the School of Engineering. The Associate Dean will hold a 0.80- to 0.50- time administrative appointment in the School, with primary responsibilities for addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The remaining FTE of the appointment will be in the individual’s academic departmental appointment during the academic year. The selected candidate may negotiate between 0.80- to 0.50-time appointment based on the level of research, teaching, and/or service the individual intends to engage in outside the scope of the Associate Dean role. The selected candidate may negotiate the working title. The Associate Dean serves at the pleasure of the Dean of the School of Engineering.
