Webster University, with its home campus in St. Louis, Missouri, seeks an experienced, entrepreneurial and proven leader for the position of Dean of the George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology (the Walker School). Applications and nominations are invited.
Founded in 1915, Webster University is a private, nonprofit university with a network of international branch campuses in Europe, Asia and Africa, domestic branch campuses in metropolitan areas and on military bases, and a strong online presence. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the university enrolls more than 17,000 students across its network, including approximately 4,200 at the main campus in St. Louis. Webster University’s entrepreneurial spirit drives its mission – to ensure high quality learning experiences that transform students for global citizenship and individual excellence.
Webster University is a pioneer in many aspects – an early entrant into online education, a long history of offering education to military-affiliated students on and off bases, strong experience with working adult students, and 40 years of offering U.S. degrees at international branch campuses. With a new strategic plan, Global Impact for the Next Century, the university is poised to continue its pioneering initiatives.
The University has been recognized by Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine for more than twenty years for providing an environment in which diverse students can be successful and earn degrees. It has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top two percent of universities surveyed for study abroad, and is ranked by the Institute of International Education in the top ten in the nation for long-term study abroad programs, among master’s level universities. It has been recognized by G.I. Jobs and Advanced Military Education for providing an environment in which graduate students and members of the military can be successful and earn degrees.
The George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology is Webster University’s largest school, enrolling 11,500 students across the network of campuses and online. The majority are graduate students, enrolled in one of 18 masters programs, including the largest – the MBA – and the newest and fastest-growing – an MS in Cybersecurity. A core full-time faculty, based in St. Louis in state-of-the-art facilities constructed in 2012, and a cadre of highly credentialed part-time faculty provide students with the academic and professional preparation needed to achieve success in today’s global workplace. Walker School programs are accredited by the ACBSP.
The Dean, who reports directly to the Provost, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, is responsible for the academic and administrative leadership of the School, including teaching, research, personnel matters and budgets. As a member of the Provost’s Council, the Dean will work closely with the Deans of Webster’s other schools and administrative leaders of Webster’s U.S. and international campuses and Online Learning Center. The Dean will serve as the primary spokesperson for the Walker School and will play a key role in building strong and productive relationships with alumni, corporate partners, and other key constituents of the School.
The next Dean will lead the Walker School in developing a cutting edge and sustainable strategic plan with a focus on several key university priorities: a continuous process of academic program review and improvement, including the development of new programs to enhance enrollment and improve student success; increased support for excellence in faculty teaching and scholarship; and building and enhancing community and corporate connections and partnerships.
The Dean will possess the following professional and personal attributes:
- A terminal degree in a business or related field with an academic record commensurate with appointment as full professor within the Walker School; nontraditional candidates who possess academic credentials, relevant experience, and understanding of higher education are encouraged to apply
- A strong track record of leadership, reflecting growing responsibilities and significant achievements, with evidence of a creative, team-oriented and entrepreneurial leadership style
- Demonstrated ability in visionary, strategic planning which includes convening multiple constituencies, building consensus, and implementing initiatives with proven results
- Proven skills as a financial planner and strategist and ability to develop a new program/revenue model for the Walker School
- Strong administrative and managerial skills, with experience working within complex systems and organizations
- A global mindset and commitment to building the next generation of global citizens
- Demonstrated capacity to understand, support, and work effectively with faculty and staff, build and motivate leadership teams, earn the trust of others, hold others accountable, and share and celebrate success
