University of South Dakota Foundation — Chief Financial Officer

The University of South Dakota (USD), founded in 1862, is the state’s oldest university and is designated as the public liberal arts university in South Dakota. The university works in partnership with the University of South Dakota Foundation, whose sole mission is the support of the university’s financial needs through the securing, investing and managing of private gifts. As the foundation continues its trajectory of success, and nears the completion of the second comprehensive campaign in its history, it seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead all financial aspects of the University of South Dakota Foundation.

The University of South Dakota Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) organization with a long history and the potential for a significantly successful future. Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, the CFO’s primary scope of accountability includes the overall leadership and management of the Finance Department and providing direction, coordination and evaluation of all departmental staff functions.

The CFO will join a flourishing enterprise. The foundation has been particularly successful as the steward of the support of its constituents. Significant effort has been expended in recent years to ensure that the foundation’s business practices are sound, and the foundation president and board enjoy a close and symbiotic working relationship with the university’s president and his leadership team. The new CFO will therefore have the opportunity to have a considerable impact and serve as a key collaborator in achieving the mission, goals and objectives of the foundation.

A strategically-oriented leader who exercises exceptional relationship-building abilities, communicates openly and effectively with multiple constituencies and resonates deeply with the university, its mission and the populace that it serves is highly desired. The CFO must possess leadership qualities that effectively motivate others to perform and must demonstrate a high level of accountability to the Board of Directors. The ideal candidate will have a track record of creative problem solving and helping lead an institution forward; superior analytical abilities; clear understanding of all the technical aspects of the position; and excellent financial and management skills. A master’s degree in accounting or business management with an emphasis in financial or non-profit is strongly preferred. The CFO will have five plus years of highly successful and progressively responsible experience in accounting and/or understanding of the special requirements of operating in a non-profit business setting, preferably in a higher education related foundation. A CPA license is strongly preferred.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. Review of applications has begun and will continue until the position is filled. Candidates should provide a resume, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the leadership profile available at www.wittkieffer.com, and the names and contact information of five references. References will not be contacted without prior knowledge and approval of candidates. These materials should be sent electronically via e-mail to the University of South Dakota Foundation’s consultants Amy Crutchfield and Jane Courson at USDFCFO@wittkieffer.com. The consultants can be reached by telephone through the desk of the assistant for the search, Laura Novak, at 630-575-6943.

The University of South Dakota Foundation values diversity and is committed to equal opportunity for all persons regardless of age, color, disability, ethnicity, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status or any other status protected by law.
