Earl Warren College at the University of California, San Diego seeks a Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE) to serve as director of its writing program. Warren College was established in 1974 as the fourth undergraduate college at UC San Diego. Named after the long-serving former California Governor and 14th Chief Justice of the United States, the College continues the legacy of Earl Warren by encouraging students to explore the relationship between leadership and social justice. Warren College students represent all majors offered at UC San Diego, and the college motto, “Toward a Life in Balance,” is integrated into Warren College’s academic requirements and student events to provide a well-rounded university experience. The College is dedicated to cultivating ethically responsible citizen-scholars who will become innovators in their careers at UC San Diego and beyond.
The LPSOE writing director position is a nine-month (academic-year) appointment. LPSOEs are full members of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of the University of California, San Diego. The position is analogous to a tenure-track assistant professor whose expertise and responsibilities center on undergraduate education.
Warren College Writing Program (WCWP) courses are designed to encourage the intellectual habits and practices that will give students a solid foundation for success in written and oral communication at the university and beyond. WCWP courses teach students, through intensive practice, to read critically and present academic arguments. These seminar style classes engage students in the scholarly practices necessary for effectively communicating arguments and other ideas. Students receive individual feedback not only from their instructors but also from their peers.

The WCWP Director will be an academic leader who, in addition to teaching in the program, will contribute to its design and help define its pedagogical vision. The Director will take the leadership role, in collaboration with the College Provost and the College Writing Advisory Committee, in curricular design; work with ladder-rank faculty from the Ethics and Society program in strengthening the pedagogical links between the two sets of courses required for Warren students; successfully recruit, train, and supervise graduate teaching assistants and lecturers; monitor and assess the program’s effectiveness and learning outcomes; supervise a small staff; collaborate with the directors of the other colleges’ writing programs on campus-wide writing and communication initiatives; and participate as a member of the senior staff of Warren College in coordinating academic activities and setting goals for the college. The Director will be able to propose courses to teach in Summer Session, which provides additional income.
The successful applicant should have:
- A Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric or related field with a significant background in and knowledge of the pedagogy of composition
- A record of distinguished teaching in composition or other writing programs
- Strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity
- Experience administering a college writing program or comparable program.
Salary: Salary commensurate with experience and based on published University of California pay scales.
