Simpson College — Senior Vice President and Academic Dean

Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, invites nominations and expressions of interest as the College begins its search for a new Senior Vice President and Academic Dean.

Simpson College is a four-year, comprehensive private college of the liberal arts and sciences affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Located just south of Des Moines, the capital of Iowa, Simpson’s picturesque 85-acre campus in Indianola is home to about 1,400 full-time undergraduate students with an additional 400 non-traditional students at two campuses in the Des Moines metro area. The College was founded in 1860 and named in honor of Bishop Matthew Simpson: teacher, abolitionist, and informal advisor to President Abraham Lincoln. Since its founding, the College has endeavored to honor Simpson’s legacy and the College’s Mission by acting on its enduring commitment to civic engagement, social justice, and the public good.

Simpson seeks an experienced chief academic officer who brings evidence of strong academic leadership and management, who carries a terminal degree, and who is familiar with the history and practice of the tenure process in the academy. The Senior Vice President and Academic Dean reports directly to the President and is a member of the leadership team of the College. Reporting to the Senior Vice President are the continuing and graduate education director, registrar, college librarian, director of international education, academic support services, director of the Edwards Entrepreneurial Center, executive director of the Culver Center, associate dean for retention and success, academic program directors, and the faculty.

Among the tasks that will engage the chief academic officer are these: to review existing academic programs to assess student demand and program effectiveness and efficiency; to foster opportunities for new program development, particularly for the graduate and continuing education programs; to support the continuing development of enhanced retention and graduation rates; and to devise, implement, and support strategies which will build multicultural diversity of the faculty.
