New York University seeks a new Dean for Liberal Studies, an integral part of the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS), to guide this interdisciplinary branch of the University forward. Working closely with the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Dean serves as the academic leader of Liberal Studies and interacts collaboratively with provosts, deans, faculty, staff, and students to advance the academic mission of the University.
The successful candidate for this important position will combine demonstrated excellence in teaching with a strong academic publication record. S/he should have a manifest desire to cultivate the diversity of scholarly and creative strengths within the faculty body, and to promote excellence innovatively in all areas. Recognizing the particular importance of Global Liberal Studies at NYU, s/he will have a global outlook and a commitment to continue ongoing efforts to develop Liberal Studies as a curricular hub for NYU’s global network, while being conversant with the critics, theories, and debates of Global Studies. Experience working with a study abroad program is therefore highly desirable, as is experience in successfully supporting effective use of digital technologies in teaching and research. S/he will have the leadership qualities needed to unite and motivate faculty and students, understanding and appreciating their diverse interests and placing a high value on uniting the Liberal Studies community in service of its mission. S/he will have experience in leading an academic program with a strong focus on teaching, success in developing academic programs or initiatives, as well as acumen for strategic management and navigating complex university systems, executing and planning a budget, obtaining grants and other external funding.
