The Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of Secondary/Middle Grades Mathematics Education.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning, the Assistant Professor of Secondary/Middle Grades Mathematics Education position requires teaching, service, and research responsibilities, as well as a terminal degree in secondary/middle grades mathematics education or a closely related field. The Assistant Professor of Secondary/Middle Grades Mathematics Education is expected to collaborate with faculty across the College of Education, teach mathematics methods and other program courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; supervise candidates enrolled in practicum courses and student teaching; model effective teaching practices; use instructional technology, including teaching fully online courses; serve on Ed.S. and doctoral committees; and perform service to the department, college, university, and community. Opportunities may also be available to teach in the department’s ESOL endorsement program, the M.Ed. in Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students, and the fully online M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction/Accomplished Teaching. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in secondary/middle grades mathematics education or a closely related field by August 1, 2017
  • Minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in mathematics coursework
  • Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience in grades 4-12
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Evidence of scholarship or scholarly potential pertaining to the teaching and learning of secondary/middle grades mathematics education
  • A willingness to travel off campus for teaching and supervision of teacher candidates
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of experience teaching mathematics in grades 4-12 in a United States public school setting
  • Knowledge surrounding the cognitive development of secondary/middle grades learners
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Experience in university teaching and/or supervision of field experiences
  • Active in professional secondary/middle grades or mathematics education organizations
  • Knowledge of and experience with edTPA
