The Director of the Nursing Learning Center is the manager of the clinical skills laboratory and facilitator of simulation activities for the Department of Nursing. The Director serves as an evaluator and tutor/coach for students referred to the lab for academic and clinical skills support. The Director oversees the maintenance and ordering of all durable and disposable medical supplies and biomedical equipment required for the smooth running of the clinical skills lab. The Director is expected to teach 4-8 credits per year over a 12 month period.

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for the day to day functioning of the nursing lab and simulation activities for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Maintains an inventory of durable and disposable medical/nursing supplies.
  • Reorders supplies, purchases equipment as needed after consulting with the faculty as to specific needs.
  • Maintains master lab schedule for university-wide distribution.
  • Primary contacts include, but are not limited to: Students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff, university administration, and the public (student applicants, parents, practitioners, and educators).
  • Collects, analyzes and tracks statistical data with respect to simulation sessions, such as: student and faculty responses/concerns, anticipated content needs, knowledge transference as a result of participation in scenarios, and more.
  • Remains current with available technologies and other lab experiences by attending outside education seminars and programs related to nursing education, the use of simulation in the educational setting.
  • Teaches 4-8 credits per year as needed by department (most likely during the summer).


  • A Master’s degree in nursing is required.
  • A minimum of three years of full time nursing practice in a medical surgical or critical care environment is required.
  • Prior experience in the role of a lab director or coordinator is preferred.
  • Current RN licensure in the State of Connecticut or be eligible for licensure.
  • Knowledge and experience with simulation activities is highly desirable.
  • The Director must possess excellent problem solving and organizational skills and be able to make pedagogically sound decisions with respect to: students’ learning needs and progress, instructional approaches to students who participate in lab experiences.
  • Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment.   Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed (e.g., mail merge, data base management).
  • Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate professionally with students, colleagues, and external constituents.
  • Cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or employee population.
  • Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Grade 41; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
