Three Black Scholars Appointed to Positions as Deans

Lisa-KirtmanLisa Kirtman was promoted to dean of the College of Education at California State University, Fullerton. She has been serving as associate dean. Dr. Kirtman has been on the faculty at the college for 16 years and is the former chair of the department of elementary and bilingual education.

Dr. Kirtman is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where she majored in psychology. After teaching in the public schools, she earned a master’s degree in educational administration from UCLA and a doctorate in educational policy from the University of California, Berkeley.

winston_soboyejoWinston Oluwole Soboyejo was named the Bernard M. Gordon Dean of Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He has been serving as a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University in New Jersey. Dr. Soboyejo is the former president and provost of the African University of Science and Technology.

Dr. Soboyejo was born in Palo Alto, California, but grew up in Nigeria. He is a graduate of Kings College in London and holds a Ph.D. in materials science and metallurgy at the University of Cambridge in England.

gantJon Gant was appointed dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Gant has been serving on the faculty of the Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Gant is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
