Angela Flournoy to Receive the 2016 Cabell First Novelist Award

aflournoy_credit_latoya_t_duncanAngela Flournoy has been selected as the winner of the 2016 Cabell First Novelist Award presented by Virginia Commonwealth University. She will be honored on November 17 in Richmond for her book The Turner House (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2015).

Angela FlournoyBookThe novel begins in 2008 when a mother of 13 children has to sell her home in a deteriorating Detroit neighborhood. The novel recounts the family’s history over the previous half century.

Flournoy’s novel was chosen from 162 entries. She will receive a cash prize and will participate in a reading and a roundtable discussion about the book at Virginia Commonwealth University. The novel also has been chosen as a finalist for the National Book Award.

Flournoy has taught at the University of Iowa, The New School, and Columbia University. She is a graduate of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and holds a master’s degree from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa.
